Matric hit a record 88% pass rate. Maths didn't.

The headline number is genuinely historic. The subject that most decides university and career options is moving the other way.

South Africa's Class of 2025 achieved a National Senior Certificate (NSC) pass rate of 88%, the highest in the country's history, across more than 900,000 candidates. It's a real achievement worth acknowledging. But underneath that headline number, the subjects that open the most doors, Mathematics especially, told a different story.

What actually happened to Maths

The Mathematics pass rate fell from 69% in 2024 to 64% in 2025. Just as concerning: only 34.1% of matrics took Pure Mathematics at all, meaning the majority opted for Mathematical Literacy instead, a choice that closes off many university degree and bursary pathways later. Physical Sciences moved in the opposite direction, improving from 76% to around 77-78%, a genuine bright spot.

Accounting also fell, from 81% to 78%, adding to a pattern education commentators have flagged: the "gateway" subjects, the ones that actually determine what a learner can study or apply for after school, are not sharing in the overall pass-rate improvement.

Why this matters beyond one year's numbers

A record pass rate is worth celebrating, but a shrinking Pure Maths cohort and a falling Maths pass rate compound over years, not just one exam cycle. Fewer learners taking Pure Maths this year means fewer learners eligible for STEM degrees, engineering, medicine and many bursary-funded pathways next year, regardless of how the overall pass rate looks.

The pattern behind the numbers: Maths avoidance is rarely about ability. Many learners move to Mathematical Literacy, or disengage from Pure Maths, after a specific topic (often algebra, trigonometry, or functions) stops making sense and the gap compounds from there. Catching that early, with real explanation rather than just more practice sums, is what actually turns the trend around for an individual learner.
