Grade 12 Maths Study Guide (CAPS & IEB)
Every topic, the marks they're worth, common mistakes markers see every year, and a realistic study plan โ for South African CAPS and IEB matric learners.
Last updated: 8 August 2026
Grade 12 Maths is the subject most matrics say they wish they'd started revising earlier. Not because any single topic is impossible, but because the final exam draws on almost everything you've learned since Grade 10 at once โ a calculus question can hinge on algebra you last touched two years ago. This guide breaks the syllabus into what actually gets examined, where marks are commonly lost, and how to plan your revision so nothing gets left for the final week.
The full Grade 12 CAPS Maths topic list
Across Paper 1 and Paper 2, DBE Grade 12 covers:
| Topic | Typical weight | Where it bites |
|---|---|---|
| Patterns & sequences | Paper 1, ~25 marks | Mixing up arithmetic vs geometric formulas under time pressure |
| Functions & inverses | Paper 1, ~35 marks | Sketching the inverse instead of just solving for it algebraically |
| Exponential & logarithmic functions | Paper 1 | Log laws โ most-lost marks in this section come from a single misapplied law |
| Finance (annuities, bonds, sinking funds) | Paper 1, ~15 marks | Using the wrong timeline / not adjusting n and i to match the payment frequency |
| Calculus (differentiation, curve sketching, optimisation) | Paper 1, ~35 marks | Optimisation word problems โ setting up the equation, not the differentiation itself |
| Probability | Paper 1, ~15 marks | Confusing "and" (multiply) with "or" (add) for independent events |
| Analytical geometry | Paper 2, ~40 marks | Sign errors in gradient/distance formulas carried through the whole question |
| Trigonometry (identities, general solutions, 2D/3D) | Paper 2, ~50 marks | Forgetting the "+kยท360ยฐ" or "+kยท180ยฐ" general solution term |
| Euclidean geometry | Paper 2, ~50 marks | Stating a theorem without the exact reason wording markers require |
| Statistics | Paper 2, ~20 marks | Reading the wrong value off a cumulative frequency (ogive) graph |
Where matrics actually lose marks (not where they think)
Every year, examiner reports point to the same handful of issues โ not "not knowing the work," but losing marks on work learners genuinely understood:
- Rounding too early. Carrying a rounded intermediate answer into the next step compounds the error and can cost the whole question, not just one mark.
- Skipping units and final statements. "x = 4" isn't a final answer if the question asked for a length in metres โ the answer line matters as much as the working.
- Not showing the "why" in geometry. A correct geometric answer with the wrong (or missing) reason still loses the reason mark โ CAPS and IEB memos are strict about this.
- Restarting from scratch when stuck. Method marks exist for a reason โ a partially correct, clearly laid-out attempt scores more than a blank space or an erased attempt.
A realistic Grade 12 Maths study plan
Cramming Maths in the final week doesn't work the way it can for a content-heavy subject โ Maths is built on cumulative skills, not facts to memorise the night before. A more realistic split:
- Terms 1โ2: Keep up with class pace. Do the homework the day it's set, not the day before it's checked โ this is where most of the "forgotten by finals" gap starts.
- Term 3: Start topic-by-topic past-paper questions, oldest weak topics first. Redo any topic where you score under 60% before moving on.
- Term 4, weeks 1โ3: Full past papers under timed conditions, one every 2โ3 days, alternating Paper 1 and Paper 2. Mark against the real memo, not just "did I get the right number."
- Final week: Formula sheet drilling, your personal "mistakes I keep making" list, and light review only โ no new topics.
Frequently asked questions
What Maths topics are in Grade 12 CAPS?
Patterns & sequences, functions & inverses, exponential & logarithmic functions, finance, calculus, probability, analytical geometry, trigonometry, Euclidean geometry, and statistics โ see the table above for where marks concentrate in each.
Is Grade 12 Maths different for IEB?
Same core topics, more integrated and application-led question style, with AP Maths available as an additional subject. See our IEB mode for how ExamAce tutors to that difference specifically.
How many hours a week should I study Grade 12 Maths?
5โ7 focused hours a week outside class for most of the year, rising in the final two months before finals โ spread across short daily sessions rather than one long weekend block.
